Casa Rambed: a V-shape house in the woods 2006-2008

The peculiarity of the natural setting, the views of the valley and the functionality that the client demanded made us think of those Californian homes designed by Richard Neutra back in the 50’s.
The house with a “V” shape plan had to be horizontal, tectonic, but at the same time friendly and respectful with the forest. It had to levitate on the site in order to simulate weightlessness.
The materials chosen –limestone, wood and steel – had to integrate well with the surroundings, and the color scheme was carefully studied, selecting sober and neutral tones that would blend seamlessly with the site’s natural background setting.
The lot has a peninsula-shape and a slope with a Southwest orientation and a street that surrounds it, except on the north side which limits with a neighboring site.
The design program for the house needed to adapt itself to a young couple with two small daughters. They required comfort, functionality and transparency; this is why we decided to design fluid spaces that had a continuous relation with the exterior of the house.
Due to the characteristics of the lot, the complexity of the project was to solve and define-with architectural elements-which were the public facades and which were the private ones. We decided to make two volumes to well define the most intimate part of the woods in order to keep it, as much as possible, away from the street.
Therefore, the house is placed on the highest point of the site and it is resolved with the placement of two wings that form a V-shape plan.

A las faldas de la montaña la Mola se sitúa el solar de intervención. Es un lugar mágico, rodeado de naturaleza: pinos, encinas y robles perfumados con una variedad de aromas de arbustos autóctonos y la humedad de la tierra que los aguarda...
La particularidad del entorno natural, las vistas hacia el valle y la funcionalidad que pedía el cliente, llevaron a pensar en aquellas casas americanas diseñadas en los años cincuentas, de las quizás sea el mejor ejemplo las de Richard Neutra construidas en California.
Debía ser una casa con líneas horizontales, tectónica, pero sobretodo dulce y respetuosa con el bosque, que no se asentara bruscamente sobre el terreno, al contrario, debía levitar sobre la tierra y simular la ingravidez.
Los materiales seleccionados -piedra, madera y hierro- también debían integrarse con el lugar, se buscaron tonos sobrios y neutros que se diluyeran suavemente en el paisaje.
El solar, con forma peninsular, tiene una pendiente orientada hacia el suroeste y una calle circundante. Solo la parte norte linda con una parcela vecina.
El programa debía adaptarse a una familia joven con dos niñas pequeñas. Se exigía comodidad, funcionalidad y transparencia, por eso se decidió hacer espacios fluidos que tuvieran una relación constante con el exterior.
Debido a las características del terreno, la complejidad era resolver y delimitar con la arquitectura cuales serían las fachadas públicas y cuales las privadas. Se decidió implantar dos volúmenes que delimitaran la zona más intima del bosque para mantenerla más alejada de la calle.
Así pues, la vivienda se sitúa en la zona más alta de la parcela y está resuelta en dos alas que forman una planta en forma de “V”.
